Northgate Welcomes Dr. Merrill to Expand Our Coastal Resiliency Planning and Economics Services

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Samuel (Sam) Merrill joined our team in the fall of 2019 to lead Northgate’s climate adaptation practice. Dr. Merrill earned his PhD and Master’s from the University of Minnesota and is a subject matter expert in climate adaptation finance, benefit-cost analysis, environmental planning, and risk management. He has held resiliency-related directorships in corporate, academic, nonprofit, and government sectors. One example of his initiatives that capture emerging markets is development and implementation (in over 20 engagements) of the COAST software for 3D visualization of damages from sea level rise and storm surge under different adaptation scenarios.

From 2000 through 2012, Dr. Merrill was a professor of Community Planning and Development at the Muskie School of Public Service, University of Southern Maine. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed papers including recent works on innovations in climate adaptation finance. He has received many awards for his work including an Environmental Merit Award from the US EPA and a Visionary Award from the Gulf of Maine Council. Dr. Merrill is also an Honorary Lieutenant Colonel with the National Guard. His international work includes lecturing and consulting for organizations in India and Belgium (in English) and in Mexico and Costa Rica (in Spanish).

Northgate is excited to expand our offerings in coastal resiliency planning and economics under Dr. Merrill’s leadership.
