This fall, Northgate Principal Geologist Joni Fisher participated in the 2019 Annual Contractor Safety Forum at the Southern California Edison (SCE) office in Rosemead, California. The event was hosted by the Environmental Services Department. During each annual forum, the meeting culminates with SCE providing an award to one contractor for outstanding safety performance for that year. Principal Engineer Axel Rieke attended the California Stormwater Quality Association 2019 Annual Conference this month. The CASQA Annual Conference offered a unique opportunity to interact with professionals in the stormwater field. Each year the conference draws leading members of the stormwater community including local, state, and federal decision makers, stormwater program coordinators, contractors, consultants, engineers, lawyers, scientists, and planners. Over 1200 participants arrived for three days of in-depth training and discussions addressing a wide-range of challenges and opportunities facing stormwater practitioners in California and beyond.
Principal Engineers Nancy Hendrickson and Ana Demorest just returned from the Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Both Nancy and Ana have worked on MGP projects throughout their 30-year-careers. The conference provided an opportunity to share experiences and through technical presentations, panels, and posters and interacting with representatives from over 50 companies including utilities, regulatory agencies, universities, consulting firms and contractors.

In 2018, Northgate’s Principal Geologist Maile Smith took part in two volunteer delegations as part of the TechWomen program, traveling to both Nigeria and Malaysia. In 2019, as Northgate continues our social responsibility and commitment to mentoring women in science, Maile is headed to Uzbekistan. The purpose of the delegation trips is to engage and encourage women to consider a career path in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). While women are gaining numbers in traditionally male-dominated fields, they are still significantly outnumbered in STEM. Among girls, interest in STEM begins to wane in early adolescence. Northgate’s 2017 TechWomen mentee, Ijeoma Vincent-Akpu, was recently promoted to Head of the Animal and Environmental Biology Department at the University of Port Harcourt in Nigeria. Previously she was a Senior Lecturer, leading graduate and post-graduate courses on hydrobiology, fisheries biology, aquatic toxicology, environmental impact assessment, coastal resource management, and climate change adaptation. Ijeoma is most excited about teaching others how to adopt best practices in sustenance-level aquaculture, sparking change in people’s attitudes and relationship to the environment and ecosystem, while improving opportunities and livelihoods in the Niger Delta, especially for at-risk youth. Earlier this spring, Northgate Engineer Nicky Robinson presented at the Association for Environmental Health and Sciences (AEHS) Foundation’s 28th Annual International West Coast Conference on Soil, Water, Energy and Air. Nicky presented a remediation case study entitled, “Minimizing Environmental Exposure by Incorporating Redevelopment Design in Remediation of Former Wood Treatment Facility”. Her poster explored the management and mitigation of a 12-acre remediation of soil, groundwater, and soil vapor at a site that historically served as a wood treatment facility and an oilfield for the past 70 years.
